Background: In 2024, residents of the building proposed a mural to beautify their community and contribute to Sarasota’s public art landscape. Following review and approval by the Public Art Committee (PAC) in May 2025, the City issued a national Call to Artists through CallForEntry.org. From 133 applications, a jury panel of neighborhood residents and community representatives reviewed and scored all submissions. Ten semifinalists were identified, and from this group, the top five artists were selected by the Public Art Committee to develop full-color concept designs. Each finalist received a stipend to refine their proposals for the site. After reviewing public feedback and evaluating the finalist concepts, the Public Art Committee selected Truman Adams (Sarasota, FL) as the artist for the 10th and Osprey mural project.
Artist Statement: "This trompe l’oeil mural features painted niches that echo the shape and placement of the surrounding windows, creating a 3D illusion that blurs the line between architecture and art. Hidden within these recesses is a secret word — “ArT” — not immediately obvious, but once seen, it can’t be unseen. The warm peach/grey to cool grey gradient background has a stylized floral pattern featuring native Sarasota flora, Southern Magnolia, Fire Bush, and Saw Palmetto, that guide the viewer’s eye through the piece, creating contrast with the hyper-real parakeets perched in the A, r and T, letter niches, one Monk parakeet and two Nanday parakeets, the Nanday being the most visible in the Gillespie Park neighborhood."
