Hurricane Milton - 1 year later

One year ago today, on the heels of Hurricane Helene, Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key as a Category 3 hurricane. With sustained winds of up to 120mph at landfall, Hurricane Milton left devastation in its wake as it passed over Sarasota.

As the wind died, it became clear that recovery would be a long, difficult process. City staff faced this challenge head-on, immediately starting work to clear roadways, mitigate hazards, and ensure public safety. City storm debris collection contractors quickly began picking up and sorting mountains of construction, household and vegetative debris. In just under 3 months, over 439,100 tons of debris were collected and disposed of.

Addressing financial hurdles and supply chain struggles, the City is moving forward with 14 major restoration projects, each with completed designs and waiting on required state and federal permitting. Construction on the majority of these projects is estimated to begin early next year. Visit www.Sarasotafl.gov/RestoringSarasota for updates.

While significant progress has been made towards restoration, including the reopening of all City facilities and all but 3 City parks, there is still work to be done. We thank the community for its patience as staff work around the clock to restore and improve the resilience of our special City.
