Homeless Response Coordinator joins ABC7 to discuss homelessness

August 25, 2026

Shellie Legarsky, the City's Homeless Response Coordinator, joined ABC7 News at Noon yesterday to discuss the City's comprehensive approach to addressing homelessness in Sarasota.

Shellie explained how the City's civilian caseworkers collaborate with the Sarasota Police Department to provide a range of services to homeless individuals, connecting them with the help they need to get back on their feet.

In addition, Shellie expressed that the kindest way to respond to an unsheltered person is to reach out to the Homeless Outreach Team rather than giving money, food, or supplies. If an individual feels their needs have been met while living on the street, it is much less likely that they will seek the help they need to eventually become housed. Those who want to take a more active role in addressing homelessness are encouraged to donate or volunteer their time to local charitable organizations, like Resurrection House, that coordinate with the City.

For more information or to get in contact with the Homeless Outreach Team, email HomelessResponse@SarasotaFL.gov or call 941-263-6302.
