The City of Sarasota Public Art Program is commissioning a large-scale mural at Amaryllis Park Place, an affordable housing development located within the historic Newtown neighborhood. This project is being developed in partnership with the Sarasota Housing Authority and will be guided by a stakeholder group representing community, arts, and neighborhood perspectives.
The mural will reflect the theme “Where Home Takes Root,” inviting artists to explore ideas of home, belonging, continuity, and shared cultural experience through a site-responsive work that honors both history and contemporary community life.
The Call for Artists is now open and is being administered through the CaFÉ (CallForEntry.org) platform. This opportunity is issued primarily as a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) and is open to local and regional artists.
Artists will be evaluated based on artistic excellence, demonstrated experience, and the strength of their overall body of work. Applicants may include an initial concept idea; however, fully developed designs are not required at this stage. As part of the application, artists are asked to submit a brief personal narrative reflecting on what this project and site mean to them. Artists are encouraged to write authentically and from the heart. The use of generative technologies for the narrative portion of the application is not permitted.
Local artists and regional artists located within 100 miles of the City of Sarasota are strongly encouraged to apply. Formerly local Sarasota artists who no longer reside in the region but maintain a strong connection to the city are also eligible.
Three finalists will be selected and each will receive a $500 stipend to develop full-color concept proposals with stakeholder input. The total artist budget is up to $25,000, inclusive of all costs.
