Safety Partnerships
The City of Sarasota works closely with our local, regional and state partners to improve roadway safety for our residents, visitors, and commuters by following a Safe System Approach.
Sarasota County
Alongside the cities of Venice, North Port, and the Town of Longboat Key, the City of Sarasota is partnered with Sarasota County on implementing a countywide Safety Action Plan. The Safety Action Plan was funded, in part, with a Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Discretionary Federal Grant.
Sarasota County maintains several major corridors roadways within the city limits, including:
- University Pkwy (eastbound only)
- Tuttle Ave
- Lockwood Ridge
- Beneva Rd
- Myrtle St (East of Old Bradenton Rd)
- Webber (East of US 41)
- Bahia Vista (East of US 41)
Sarasota/Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)
The Sarasota/Manatee MPO is the transportation planning organization for the two-county urbanized area and is a key regional partner in improving roadway safety. In 2022, the Sarasota/Manatee MPO adopted the Destination Zero Safety Action Plan, a comprehensive regional strategy for reducing fatal and serious injury crashes on the regional transportation system. The City of Sarasota is an active members of the Destination Zero Advisory Group, which advises the MPO on implementation of the regional Safety Action Plan.
Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 1
The FDOT District 1 Safety Office oversees state traffic safety projects and programs in twelve counties, including Sarasota County. FDOT District 1 is a key partner to address safety on state maintained roadways, including:
- US 41 (Tamiami Trail, Mound St, Bayfront Dr)
- US 301 (Washington Blvd)
- SR 780 (Fruitville Rd)
- SR 789 (John Ringling Causeway, John Ringling Blvd, and Blvd of the Presidents)
The City of Sarasota participates in the monthly Sarasota/Manatee Community Traffic Safety Team (CTST) meetings. The CTST is a network of diverse stakeholders that coordinate on roadway safety and tackle action items to address immediate safety concerns. The Sarasota/Manatee CTST includes representatives from FDOT, Sarasota County, Sarasota/Manatee MPO, bicycle advocacy, law enforcement, education, and public health.
