"SWING" Sculpture at Payne Park Tennis Center

SWING is a new public art commission created for Payne Park Tennis Center (2050 Adams Lane, Sarasota), a well‑loved community destination known for its active public courts, youth programs, social leagues, and welcoming atmosphere for players of all ages. The tennis center sits within Payne Park, a lively recreation hub featuring trails, open green space, a popular disc golf course, and family amenities that make it a gathering place for residents throughout Sarasota. The sculpture was designed to reflect the movement, rhythm, and energy that define daily life at the facility.

Created by sculptor Michael DiCarlo, SWING transforms the form of a tennis racket into a spiraling composition of rising shapes. Each racket arcs upward in a rotating sequence that captures the momentum and joy of play. Perforated steel “strings” allow sunlight to pass through, creating shifting patterns across the courtyard, and the powder‑coated colors were chosen to complement the bright, tropical palette found throughout Payne Park. The piece invites visitors to walk around it and experience its changing shadows and angles throughout the day.

Michael DiCarlo is a Brooklyn‑based sculptor whose work blends digital design, engineering, and handcrafted metal fabrication. His sculptures often explore motion, repetition, and the interaction between structural forms and public space. Known for dynamic, durable installations, DiCarlo creates artworks that enliven civic environments. SWING reflects his interest in capturing movement in a way that feels uplifting, playful, and connected to community life.
