Utility improvement project along N. Tamiami Trail to begin Sept. 15

Sarasota, FL: A utility improvement project replacing sections of aging water main under N. Tamiami Trail will begin Monday, Sept. 15. Two-way traffic will be maintained for the duration of the project.

The inside southbound and inside northbound lanes of N. Tamiami Trail, between 14th Street and 22nd Street, will be closed during the first phase of the project, which is estimated to be completed in Spring 2026. Digital signage has been installed, notifying motorists of lane closures prior to the beginning of construction.

“This utility improvement project is part of a continued effort by the City to modernize and strengthen our water utilities infrastructure,” said Utilities Engineering Manager Georges Nicolas. “While two lanes of N. Tamiami Trail will need to be closed for the duration of the project, two-way traffic will be maintained. We appreciate the community’s patience during this significant infrastructure improvement.”

The project is a multi-phase utility improvement project stretching from 14th Street to University Parkway. This $30 million project will replace aging segments of water main beneath N. Tamiami Trail, increasing the safety and resilience of the City’s water utility. Phase 1 of this project begins Sept. 15, with all 7 project phases estimated to be complete in early 2028.

Temporary traffic calming measures will be implemented on several side streets between N. Tamiami Trail and Cocoanut Avenue during phase 1 of the project to address speeding on adjacent residential streets. Motorists are encouraged to remain on N. Tamiami Trail.
