Boating-related accidents take an average of 650 lives each year in the United States. It is crucial to raise awareness about safety practices that help recreational boaters enjoy the water responsibly, such as the use of well-fitted U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jackets.
Since 1958, the National Safe Boating Council has led efforts to promote boating safety through education, outreach, and training initiatives. This morning, the City Commission recognized May 16–22, 2026 as National Safe Boating Week, acknowledging the importance of this work in our community. The Sarasota Police Marine Unit and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary from Flotilla 84 work together to help ensure safe boating locally and joined to receive the proclamation.
