City to observe Juneteenth holiday; no changes to trash collection

Sarasota, FL: City administrative offices will be closed Friday, June 19 in observance of the Juneteenth national holiday.

Garbage/recycling and yard waste collection schedules will not be affected by the holiday. For questions about garbage and recycling collection, visit SarasotaFL.Gov or contact the Solid Waste Division at 941-263-6170.

Holiday hours of operation at City of Sarasota facilities will vary:

Juneteenth Celebration: A Juneteenth celebration, co-sponsored by the City of Sarasota, will take place from 1-6 p.m. on Saturday, June 20 on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way between N. Links Avenue and Pershing Avenue. This free, family-friendly event will feature live music, food trucks, vendors, and activities. Tree Giveaway: As part of the Juneteenth Celebration, the City will give away 75 trees to City of Sarasota residents. Species of trees being offered include:

  • avocado
  • loquat
  • mango
  • red maple
  • red mulberry

City arborists will be on site to provide guidance on selection and care. Trees will be available from 1-6 p.m. at the corner of N. Links Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

To qualify for a tree, valid identification or a utility bill showing City of Sarasota residency must be provided. Qualifying homeowners’ associations, condominium associations and apartment complexes will be allowed one tree only for a common area with required documentation verifying authorization from the association or property management company.

Trees for this event were paid for by the City’s Tree Mitigation Fund, which collects a portion of tree removal permit dollars to be used for urban canopy programs.
