The Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences America 250 Collage Flag Quilt was created by students and art educators at SSA+S to mark America 250, the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Students were invited to reflect on the meaning of America through themes such as history, technology, the arts, industry, and community.
Each student designed a single artwork square. SSA+S teachers photographed and digitally assembled the individual pieces into a coordinated collage in shades of red, white, and blue. Together, the students’ squares form a unified image of the American flag.
The completed quilt was presented to the Sarasota City Commission on May 18, 2026. It is now on temporary display in the City Hall lobby, where visitors can view the students’ creative contributions to this community project. The quilt highlights the imagination and civic engagement of Sarasota’s youth and recognizes the important role that students and educators play in shaping public art in our city.
