Call For Artists - Payne Park Tennis Center Courtyard Sculpture

The City of Sarasota Public Art Program, in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department, is excited to announce an opportunity for artists to create a permanent sculpture for the interior courtyard of Payne Park Tennis Center.

Located in the heart of downtown Sarasota, Payne Park Tennis Center is a vibrant public sports facility featuring 12 Har-Tru courts, shaded seating, a pro shop, and a welcoming courtyard used by thousands of residents and visitors each year. This commission offers the chance to integrate art into a lively and inclusive civic space that blends recreation, community, and culture.

The selected sculpture will be prominently placed within the courtyard, a partially shaded, highly visible location that is also viewable from the public right-of-way. The courtyard is viewed by hundreds of visitors daily and is fully accessible to the public during facility hours. Surrounding landscaping will be adjusted to complement the selected sculpture. The work should be original, visually compelling from multiple angles, and fabricated from durable, weather-resistant materials suited to Sarasota’s climate. Artists are encouraged to consider how their designs will complement the courtyard’s scale and surroundings, and to propose works that are safe, stable, and inviting to the public without presenting hazards or encouraging climbing.

Themes to consider include:

  • Motion, rhythm, and sport
  • Innovation and artistic expression
  • Connection and community
  • Sarasota’s cultural vibrancy

Proposals may be figurative, abstract, or conceptual, and may be newly commissioned or existing works. While the artist budget is up to $25,000, proposals of all budget levels will be considered, and competitive bidding will be one of several factors in the selection process.

The City will provide the concrete base, integrated or required lighting, and a permanent plaque. The selected artist will work with City staff to coordinate installation with minimal disruption to the facility’s operations.
