Convenient on-street parking is available at approximately 3,000 parking spaces within the City of Sarasota. Parking in one of the City’s on-street parking spaces can, at peak times of the day, become challenging to locate a space near your desired location. The lack of accessibility has prompted the city to closely study how to best manage the resources of street parking and ensure accessibility for all users.  With an eye on improving foot traffic to our downtown merchants, the City has embarked on implementation of metered parking on the busiest and desirable areas of downtown.

And with this change, there still are thousands of parking spaces near your destination and that provide you with at least 2 hours free parking!

New Downtown Map and Brochure

After years of continued downtown and regional growth, both in the residential and business properties, now, more than ever, the demand for parking in the prime spaces in downtown leaves close access, well, something to be desired, and downright difficult during the peak business hours.

The new metered parking program will improve parking accessibility, turnover and create shorter walking distances to stores and restaurants. Plus, with less cruising around to find a parking space, there will be fewer vehicles emissions — which will help reduce pollution downtown.

The meters are state of the art equipment used around the world, and are as easy to use as an ATM. The equipment was selected by public survey as the most intuitive and friendly to use. You only need to enter your license plate and how much time you need for parking. You may want to take a picture of your plate for use at the pay station.  Metered parking is $1.50 per hour, and if it slips your mind the first time, be sure to take advantage of our One Time Waiver program.

Another great way to pay for metered spaces is using the ParkMobile App. You can now skip going to the meter, and pay by phone wherever you are, in a space, at store, or while finishing desert at a restaurant.

To use ParkMobile, simply download the app, setup an account, and when parking-enter the zone number located on signs where you are parked to activate your time. There is a small convenience fee added for each mobile app transaction. You can use the app to notify you when the parking time expires, and it allows you to add time from wherever you are.

Time Restricted Parking

There are hundreds of marked and unmarked spaces available for on-street parking. Time and days vary for restrictions, but by and large the effective time restriction periods are Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m., excluding city holidays and Sundays. Signs are posted near parking spaces and should be seen by anyone with reasonably good vision.

Please be sure to observe and comply with all posted signs and be aware of parking laws which are not always posted.

Parking for the Disabled (handicap parking) The State of Florida mandates that on-street metered parking be provided free for up to 4 hours for individuals with a valid disabled placard, and for DMV plates. Parking is permitted without payment at any on-street location with or without meters, so long as the valid users is displaying a permit.

Other important parking notes:

Motorcycle parking is available throughout Downtown. Please note the difference between motorcycle parking spaces, regular metered spaces, and disabled parking access spaces. Motorcycles which use a metered space must pay for parking as would any vehicle. Motorcycles wishing to use the public parking garages should look for the “free” motorcycle corrals located on the ground floor, outside of the gated system.

No overnight RV Parking is permitted, and vehicles need to fit within the allowed parking spaces.

The city works very hard at protecting public access to parking spaces through. City of Sarasota parking code 33-118 prohibits a parker from relocating from one space to another on that block or any other block within one block radius in any direction for the ordinal parking space, including both sides of the relevant streets…  This ordinance applies in off-street parking facilities as well.

Where spaces are lined, parking in the designated space is required under local ordinance. This is done to ensure the most efficient use of parking and make more spaces available and easier for everyone to find and use parking. If a vehicle wheel is outside of the designated space/line, this could cause a safety hazard and prevent other parking customers from adequately gaining access to the adjacent parking space.

For any commercial vendor service that requires on-street access beyond the time limit, right of way permits may be obtained by contacting the Engineering Division at 941.365.2200, ext 4375. More information can be obtained here.
