In 2002, the City of Sarasota began work to formally identify Newtown as a historic City district. In addition to the creation of a biographical record of the community, an architectural inventory of the area, and the creation of a historic conservation trail, the Newtown CRA Advisory Board advocated for the creation of programs that would help to preserve historic Newtown structures.
In 2018 a pilot-program was created to allow all property owners (of structures over 50 years old) to apply for up to $50,000 in grant funding. Four properties within the Newtown CRA would be selected based on the program criteria, including giving preference to buildings that have high visibility in the Newtown community (located along the African American Heritage Trail), and to applicants who will seek local Historic designation. The Program is being cooperatively administered by the Office of Economic Development and the Planning Department’s Historic Preservation Division.
