"The Economic Development division, is a division of the City of Sarasota’s City Manager’s Office"
Our mission is to collaborate with the Newtown and Downtown communities, businesses and other stakeholders on strategic efforts to improve the quality of life for our citizens.
To enact economic and physical improvements Citywide including the Community Redevelopment Areas of Newtown and Downtown Sarasota
The office of Economic Development implements public/private projects and initiatives as directed by the City Commission, as well as those recommended by the Redevelopment Advisory Boards, and as outlined in the Newtown Community Redevelopment Area plan and Downtown Master Plan 2020 (also known as the Community Redevelopment Plan). To enact economic and physical improvements to the Community Redevelopment Areas of Newtown and Downtown Sarasota, the Redevelopment Office oversees the strategic expenditure of Tax Incremental Financing (TIF) funds as endorsed by the Community Redevelopment Area Advisory Boards (CRAAB)
(CRAAB)s established for each redevelopment area. Staff provides support to the Commission-appointed Newtown CRAAB, and Downtown CRAAB in the evaluation and subsequent recommendation of requests for TIF expenditures, and other community-development initiatives. To ensure successful completion of projects and initiatives Redevelopment staff oversee all implementation processes including procurement, progress-monitoring, fiscal oversight, and on-going community engagement with the residential and business communities the redevelopment efforts benefit.
