Sarasota, FL: The Newtown Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is undertaking an effort to update its CRA Plan and has hired consultant Redevelopment Management Associates (RMA) to assist. This plan will create a vision for the Newtown area and guide future improvements and development. The CRA is asking the public to provide their input about the projects, programs, and activities they would like to see in the plan update. The CRA will be holding public meetings to gather information from the community and will also have a survey that the community can complete online.
Over the past 10 years, the Newtown CRA has seen several new projects constructed in the area, including the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way streetscape improvements, the Newtown Conservation Historic District, Sarasota Memorial Hospital – Newtown Clinic, and Janie’s Garden. The CRA also has several training and grant programs available to help improve the community. These investments in the community are part of the CRA’s mission to foster and support redevelopment in Newtown. An update to the Newtown CRA Plan is needed to address the changing conditions in the CRA and set a vision for the area.
The CRA would like the public to be part of this plan update by sharing their insights on Newtown's current conditions, where they see room for improvement, and their overall vision for the Newtown community. The community is invited to complete an online survey by visiting https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NewtownCRA and attend a public meeting on the following date:
- October 22, 2019 - Community Meeting with a presentation at 5:30PM
The event will be held at the Goodwill, 1781 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Sarasota, FL 34234.

About the Newtown CRA: The Newtown Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) was created in 2006. It was established by the City government for the purpose of carrying out redevelopment activities that include reducing or eliminating blight, improving the economic health of an area, and encouraging public and private investments in the CRA district.
The Newtown CRA is located in District 1 of the City with its boarders of Tamiami Trail (US 41), Myrtle Street, 17th Street, and generally the Railroad Right-of-Way east of Washington Boulevard. The Newtown CRA is funded through Tax Increment Financing (TIF). The funds are collected as property values increase and a portion of that increase is captured by the Agency. TIF raises revenue for redevelopment efforts without raising taxes.
