Sarasota, FL:  The Community Canopy program, which offers free trees to help expand the urban canopy while reducing residents’ energy bills, will return to the City of Sarasota next week. In partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, the City will be giving away a total of 100 trees to residents at no cost.

Community Canopy-14Starting at midnight Sunday, Oct. 6, City residents can reserve their free trees at www.arborday.org/sarasota. (Please note:  Access to registration on the website will become available at midnight Sunday, Oct. 6.)

Two trees per household can be reserved during this giveaway on a first-come, first-serve basis, while supplies last. You must reside in the City of Sarasota limits to be eligible.

On the website, residents can use a calculator tool to estimate the annual energy savings from planting a tree in the most strategic location on their property. Participants are expected to care for the tree and plant it in the location specified by the online tool.

Four species of trees will be offered:

  • Little gem magnolia
  • Dahoon holly
  • Sweetbay magnolia
  • Baldcypress

All the species are native trees, sourced from within Florida. The trees will be delivered to the resident’s home in a one-gallon container.

“Trees do so much more than just beautify our community,” said Sustainability Manager Stevie Freeman-Montes. “As they mature, they remove carbon and other pollutants from our air and water and reduce our energy consumption. They’ve even been proven to reduce stress and have other mental health benefits. It all adds up to create a healthier environment and more livable Sarasota.”

This is the sixth Community Canopy tree giveaway for the City. To date, more than 800 trees have been given away and planted to bolster the urban canopy and help with climate mitigation and adaptation efforts.

The program is funded by the City’s tree replacement fund, which collects a portion of tree removal permit dollars to be used for urban canopy protection programs.
