Sarasota, FL: The intersection of Orange Avenue and Ringling Boulevard is now open to all traffic as a new roundabout.
Crews completed the final improvements to the roundabout Wednesday afternoon.
The previous signalized intersection was replaced with a one-lane roundabout, which will improve traffic flow as well as driver and pedestrian safety. The project included additional lighting for the road and sidewalk, landscaping improvements and a new water line.
The improvements were funded with an $880,000 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation.
This is the sixth roundabout to be added to the mobility structure in downtown since 2010. Other downtown roundabout locations include: Five Points, Ringling Boulevard/Palm Avenue, Ringling Boulevard/Pineapple Avenue, Orange Avenue/Main Street and Palm Avenue/Cocoanut Avenue.
Local artist Jorge Blanco’s aluminum sculpture, “BRAVO!” will be installed in the center of the roundabout later this summer. The installation will be coordinated to occur during off-peak hours to minimize traffic disruptions.
